So what if neither the agent or broker respond? I guess a better question is: are we at the mercy of the selling agent or can we contact Chase and find out the status?

Unless you or your agent are authorized to speak on behalf of the borrowers loan you will need to rely on the homeowner or the listing agent to give you an update. Another option would be to reach out to the escrow/title/closing attorney and see if they have an update by chance on the transaction.
