Has anyone had success getting the IRS to release a personal (not property) tax lien on a short sale? I am in escrow on a house for $420,000 and the IRS has over $900,000 in liens from non-payment of taxes. Yes, I should have looked at the prelim more closely when I took the listing and you would think I would learn by now. Any hints are greatly appreciated.

Oh boy have I been there and done that...
Get ready for a 3.5 month wait + I just finished one and it's going to be a wild ride.
I hope your client wants REALLY wants the property because it may be the 1st of the year before you get the paperwork you need to close. We just finished as I stated and it took some time and you think loss mitt sucks wait till you deal with the IRS double that times 3 so I say get ready to strap down and hang on because you are going to have a long ride..
I have added pub 783 the IRS will want an appraisal done too they did not accept the BPO that we had done.
They will want you to get an authorization to be able to speak to them for the seller all that is in PUB 783.
Good luck with this...
